Instructions
Bake the Cake
- Preheat your oven according to cake mix package directions (usually 350°F/175°C).
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray.
- Prepare the chocolate cake batter according to package directions.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
- Bake according to package directions, usually 28-33 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Remove from oven and let cool for about 5 minutes while still warm.
Poke and Soak
- Using the end of a wooden spoon, the handle of a thick spatula, or a drinking straw, poke holes all over the warm cake, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Poke all the way to the bottom.
- Pour the entire can of sweetened condensed milk slowly over the cake, making sure it seeps into all the holes. Use a spatula to spread it evenly if needed.
- Pour the caramel sauce over the cake, again ensuring it fills the holes. You may need to use a spoon to help it along.
- Let the cake cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. This allows the cake to absorb all the liquid and develop amazing flavor.
Add the Topping
- Once the cake is completely chilled, spread the whipped topping evenly over the entire surface.
- Sprinkle the toffee bits generously over the whipped cream layer.
- Scatter the chocolate chips or chocolate shavings on top.
- If desired, drizzle additional caramel sauce in a decorative pattern over the top.
Chill and Serve
- Return the cake to the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving to let everything set.
- Cut into squares and serve cold.
- Store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator.
